What is SEL?
SEL stands for social emotional learning and it is an
integral part of education and human development. SEL involves children, young
people and adults gain and effectively apply awareness, skills and attitudes to
develop strong and healthy identifies, set and achieve positive goals, manage
emotions, feel and show empathy, create and uphold caring relationships, and
make responsible and considerate decisions.
In schools, social emotional learning gives students the opportunities to
learn and practice skills such as:
-Cooperation
-Manaing conflict
-Making friends
-Coping with challenges
-Being resilient
-Recognising and managing their own feelings.
Why is SEL important?
There has been extensive research that demonstrates promoting
SEL in schools has a positive impact on a range of outcomes, including (but not
limited to):
-Academic performance
-Healthy relationships
-Mental and physical wellness
These benefits are not only gained by children and young people in schools, but
also the adults and school communities.
Multiple Meta-analyses that have been conducted (Durlak et al., 2011; Sklad et al.,
2012; Taylor et al., 2017; Wiglesworth et al., 2016) demonstrates
the same major findings; students taking part in SEL programs within their educational
settings, revealed considerably more positive outcomes when it came to improved
SEL skills, positive attitudes about themselves, others, and school, positive classroom
and social behaviours, and academic accomplishment. They also showed
significantly lower levels of behavioural challenges and emotional distress.
